Empowering Ethiopia’s Next Generation of Digital Innovators
According to a recent article by Extensia, Ethiopia is in the midst of a profound digital transformation. Guided by the Digital Ethiopia 2025 strategy, now concluding, and the upcoming Digital 2030 plan, the country is striving to harness technology to drive inclusive growth.
To contribute to the country’s broader digital transformation, SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia has aligned its work with the national vision, focusing on preparing young people to access opportunities in the digital economy. One of its flagship efforts is the Advanced Digital Skills Training, a transformative programme equipping young people with the tools and confidence to thrive in a rapidly changing world.
Opening doors to digital opportunities
On July 4, 2025, a proud group of 64 young Ethiopians from Bahirdar, Harrar, Jimma, and Hawassa graduated from the first phase of the Advanced Digital Skills Training, an initiative implemented in partnership with Learnio Academy. The programme aims to bridge the gap between local talent and global digital market needs through hands-on, practical learning.
Participants received intensive training in two high-demand fields: Digital Marketing and Graphic Design. Out of 222 applicants, 101 passed the pre-training assessment, and 64 successfully completed the programme and earned certification, a powerful testament to their dedication and drive. Beyond technical skills, the training also fostered freelancing readiness and entrepreneurship, empowering participants to become job creators, not just job seekers.
Hailu’s story: from aspiration to achievement
Among the graduates stands Hailu, a 22-year-old computer science student. When he heard about the Learnio training, he saw it as a chance to bring his dream to life, a dream of independence, creativity, and purpose.
“Before joining this training, I only had a dream to build digital skills and one day enter the market. Now, I’m actively on that path,” Hailu shares.
Hailu had no prior hands-on experience beyond his university coursework. Yet, through the Learnio training, he gained practical expertise in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign, developing a strong portfolio and a new sense of confidence. Within just two months of graduating, he secured local clients as a freelance graphic designer, translating his new skills into real-world impact.
“Taking this training has been one of the most important steps toward making my dream a reality,” he says proudly. “I’ve gained hands-on experience and a clear plan for my future. I’m no longer just dreaming, I’m doing.”
Hailu now balances his studies with freelance work, earning income, and recognition for his designs. His next goal is to expand his reach on global platforms like Upwork and Fiverr, build a portfolio, and eventually launch his own design company, collaborating with others to deliver larger projects.
About the project
The Advanced Digital Skills Training programme is part of a two-year partnership between Robert Bosch GmbH and SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia made possible through support from SOS Children’s Villages International. The programme aims to strengthen digital inclusion and entrepreneurship among children and young people by establishing and upgrading Digital Community Centers and delivering digital entrepreneurship training.
Following the successful completion of phase one, phase two of the programme was launched on November 19, 2025, expanding the programme’s reach to include even more young people from Mekelle and targeting a total of 150 participants. These young people will receive similar training in graphics design and digital marketing for a period of three months, followed by a one-month freelance opportunity facilitated by Learnio Academy. Through continued investment in digital upskilling, SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia is helping shape a future where youth can thrive in an increasingly digital world, both nationally and globally.
A future built on skills
Hailu’s story embodies what the programme stands for, empowerment, opportunity, and transformation. By nurturing digital talent, the Learnio programme not only changes individual lives but also contributes to Ethiopia’s broader vision of an inclusive and innovative digital future. For Hailu, the journey has just begun, but with his new skills and unstoppable drive, the possibilities are endless.
