Stronger Together – Youth Livelihoods as a Catalyst for Resilient Communities

When young people thrive, entire communities benefit. In Ethiopia, SOS Children’s Villages' Grow Equal project explored how youth-led livelihood initiatives can foster stability, reduce migration, and improve family cohesion.

The market and livelihood assessment revealed visible differences. Many young people are out of school and out of work. Women, especially, face economic exclusion, despite showing high motivation to start small businesses.

Survey Insight: Only 28% of youth participants reported access to financial services, yet 84% were interested in entrepreneurship.

Obstacles & Opportunities

Among the challenges:

  • Climate vulnerability disrupting traditional livelihoods
  • Gender-based barriers to land and finance
  • Urban congestion limiting access to markets

Yet the opportunities are just as compelling. Eco-tourism, digital services, and climate-resilient agriculture are all sectors where youth could thrive with the right support.

The assessment calls for a multi-stakeholder approach:

  • Government to streamline youth business licensing.
  • Private sector to co-invest in training hubs.
  • Civil society to champion inclusive financing.

“When youth feel seen and supported, they don’t just survive—they uplift their entire community,” said a local youth leader.

By strengthening youth livelihoods, we not only invest in individuals but in intergenerational stability and peace. Economic opportunity becomes a shield against social vulnerability.
