Why Children Flourish in Families Where Gender Equality Prevails

At SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia, the wellbeing of children lies at the heart of our work. Our focus on family and community strengthening is a vital part of preventing the abandonment and neglect of children. While discussions around women’s empowerment and gender equality often emphasize their importance to national development, the effects of gender equality, or the lack of it, are equally crucial for the safety and health of children. In fact, gender equality is one of the most significant factors in creating environments where children can grow up safe, healthy, and empowered to reach their full potential.

One of the cornerstones of child development is the family unit. The roles of each family member, particularly women who are often the primary caregivers, shape the environment in which children grow up in. A gender-equal family dynamic means shared responsibilities, a fair distribution of caregiving tasks, and mutual support among family members. This creates a nurturing and stable home, where children witness cooperation, shared values, and love. The fundamental aspects of a healthy upbringing.

When women are empowered, whether through access to decision-making, education, economic opportunities, or healthcare the benefits extend far beyond the individual. These benefits directly impact children, who thrive in homes where both parents (or caregivers) contribute equally. This shared approach to family responsibilities ensures that children grow up in a balanced environment, free from gender biases that might otherwise shape their perceptions of relationships and social structures.

By promoting gender equality, we create a more equitable and supportive environment for children to grow up in. In families where gender roles are balanced, children learn to value equality, respect, and fairness. Values that extend far beyond the home and into society.
