A Golden Jubilee to Remember!
While the echoes of our 50th-anniversary celebration still linger in the air, we can't help but feel a profound sense of gratitude and accomplishment. October 22, 2024 was a day filled with joy, inspiration, and a celebration of the incredible journey SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia has embarked upon.
As guests arrived at the Sheraton Addis Hotel, they were greeted with warm smiles and a touch of tradition – red flowers, a symbol of prosperity and good fortune. The entrance was adorned with a captivating photo exhibition, showcasing our organization's impact over the past five decades. A photo backdrop provided a perfect opportunity for guests to capture memories of this special occasion.
The networking hall was abuzz with conversation and the soothing melodies of an acoustic guitar performance. Refreshments were served, fostering a relaxed and enjoyable atmosphere for guests to connect and mingle.
While guests enjoyed the networking session, behind closed doors, a media briefing was taking place. Our National Director, Mr. Sahlemariam Abebe along with Mr. Bedilu Shegen, Deputy International Director at SOS Children's Villages Eastern and Southern Africa region (ESAF), the Managing Director of SOS Switzerland Mr. Alex De Geus, and Mrs. Zebider Bogale, CEO of Child rights and Protection at the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, addressed the media, sharing insights into our organization's impact and future plans.
As the media briefing concluded, guests were welcomed into the main hall. Our National Director delivered a heartfelt opening speech, followed by inspiring addresses from the Deputy International Director for ESAF who also addressed the message from Dr. Dereje Wordofa, the federation’s president from Innsbruck, Austria. The state minister to the Social Affairs under the Ministry of Women and Social Affairs, Mrs. Huria Ali took everyone by surprise when she announced in her opening remarks that she went to SOS Hermann Gmeiner Kindergarten as child and taught at the elementary school as a university graduate. A warm round of applause filled the room as the audience witnessed that she had in fact a special connection to SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia.
An independent researcher then presented a comprehensive impact assessment, highlighting the significant achievements of SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia over the years. The assessment shows that more than 8.1 million individuals have been impacted over the last 5 decades. Out of which more than half of them have been reached through health care and humanitarian aid services.
Following the remarkable presentations, emotions ran high as a powerful testimonial video showcased the stories of partners, beneficiaries, staff, and caregivers. Their heartfelt messages of gratitude and appreciation filled the room with warmth and inspiration.
A vibrant traditional dance performance followed, featuring talented young people from various regions of Ethiopia. The energetic and colorful performance uplifted spirits and added a festive touch to the celebration.
The event culminated in a series of acknowledgments and presentations. Long-serving staff members, previous national directors, and partners were recognized for their invaluable contributions. The Youth Alumni Association also presented a token of appreciation to SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia, symbolizing their enduring connection to the organization.
The closing remarks were delivered by Mr. Fasikaw Mola, Deputy Director General at the Authority for Civil Society Organizations in Ethiopia.
