SOS Children’s Villages in Ethiopia Plants Over 1,000 Seedlings to Mark 50th Anniversary

As Ethiopia welcomed the New Year, SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia embarked on a meaningful initiative to commemorate its 50 years of dedication to the country's most vulnerable children: a tree planting activity.

On September 9, 2024, in Lideta Sub-city, Gildo Washa, the energy was palpable. Nearly 250 people gathered, from government officials to local community members, each carrying a seedling with hope for the future. The site buzzed with shared purpose of planting over 1,000 fruit-bearing trees—avocados, papayas—chosen not just for their environmental impact, but also for the nourishment they would one day bring.

Beyond the environmental benefits, the tree planting activity fostered a sense of community and shared responsibility. It was a memorable occasion that strengthened bonds and reinforced SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia’s commitment to social responsibility and sustainable development.

The event was widely covered by media outlets, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation and the positive impact of community-driven initiatives. As the day drew to a close, the seedlings stood tall in their new homes, much like the organization that had been standing strong for 50 years. This day of planting held a special place in the hearts of all who attended. It was a day that reminded everyone: the seeds of today are the fruits of tomorrow.

SOS Children's Villages in Ethiopia continues its 50th anniversary celebrations with townhall meetings, press briefings, special branding campaigns, and radio program appearances already held. The festivities will culminate in a grand celebration event on October 22, 2024. We welcome your support as we approach this momentous occasion to celebrate our achievements and continue our mission of empowering children in Ethiopia.
